ABOUT
================================================================
MINDGRID:AUDIO - QUAKE was created to replace all of the audio
content of QUAKE, originally created by id Software. I have
been carefully selecting existing effects from the original
game available in some commercial sound libraries and
reimplementing then at their original CD-Audio quality. I have
also used my own creative vision to re-forge some of the sounds
in to - in my own opinion - better effects then the original,
even if the original was available to me unmodified.

This pre-release version of mindgrid:audio - QUAKE is to
complement the recently released version of FuhQuake v0.30
which supports many new features, including 44Khz mixing. I am
using it as a means to get feedback and to help define the
direction I am going with the development of a high-fidelity
audio pack.

It is far from complete.

You can obtain a lot of information about the workings of this
pack up until this point at the following messageboard thread:

http://www.fuhquake.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1678

Contained within it I offer a lot of background in to my work.

Most of the multiplayer sounds are included in this release.
This contains various ambience, doors, platforms, weapons and
a small amount of player sound effects. In terms of the
single-player side, some initial monster effect work has been
thrown in for added measure -- most noticably the fiend.

INSTALLATION
================================================================
The installation is in the form of an original QUAKE .PAK
file. Drop the PAK in your 'id1' directory as pak2.pak
to override any audio being loaded from the original QUAKE game
assets. If there are other PAK's located in the main id1
directory, you will want to rename this pak to be sequentially
loaded last -- meaning set it to the highest number.

In your QUAKE engine of choice (I'm a fan of FuhQuake), you
will need to set two important variables to obtain the best
experience with the new effects. The most important is the
'sample rate' setting. The console command for this will vary
from QUAKE-based engine to engine. Examples to look for are:

samplerate
s_khz
s_speed

You will probably want to set this for your normal day-to-day
command line execution. In FuhQuake, it would look like the
following:

fuhquake-gl.exe +set s_khz 44

To verify that the engine is running at the necessary audio
speed, look for a 'sound information' console command.
Examples to look for are:

soundinfo
s_info

This should output some text to the console, which usually
looks like this:

    1 stereo
32768 samples
    0 samplepos
   16 samplebits
    1 submission_chunk
44100 speed
0x0 dma buffer
   12 total_channels

When it says the speed is set to 44100, you are in good shape.

The next part is fairly important, as it assures that the
audio engine has enough 'head room' for mixing sounds over
one-another. It is the main audio engine volume setting.
Examples for this console command are:

volume
s_volume

The default can be around 0.7 to 0.8. I would recommend
setting this to 0.5 to 0.6 to allow for some extra breating
room. I personally have mine set to 0.666 for gimmicks sake.

Consult your engine documentation and/or website for further
details on their audio engine capabilities.
